LANing CoD4

So I was at my friend's house last night and we were gonna LAN it up. We had 6 people on 4 xboxes and at first we couldn't figure out how to join the system linked game. After about a half hour we figured out you had to start the game in order to join it. But then the problem was you couldn't sign in more than one person on each xbox, which is dumb as shit. I can understand doing it on live, but system link?
